About this series
Monthly Consumer Price Index data from Shiller's dataset, extending back to 1871. Same CPI series that the BLS publishes from 1913 forward; earlier years use BLS reconstructions of pre-CPI price levels.
Why it matters: Used to compute the "real" versions of every Shiller series. Also useful as a standalone long-run inflation reference that predates the FRED CPI series.
How to read it: Year-over-year change is the inflation rate. Like FRED's CPIAUCSL, this is the headline CPI measure — not the Fed's preferred core PCE.
Caveats: Pre-1913 values are reconstructed and less precise. For current inflation work, FRED's CPIAUCSL is more timely; this series has a larger lag.
